My Son, a charming and fantastic beauty

Photo of Entry: My Son, a charming and fantastic beauty

It is a valley where is 70 km away from Danang City. Being different from Hoian busy town, My Son is quiet with the Cham towers scattered in the mountainous scenery.

From the national highway 1A, you have to go 30 km more to reach the vestige site. After parking, you are transferred to the main area of My Son, which is about 400m more. From then, you can walk to the main area of the site. It is believe that people have to walk along the God mountain side to enter the Cham tower site. It means that you have to go along the East-West direction or from sunrise to sunset or from yin to yang in the yinyang Asian belief. If so, you must start your trip from Que Son (Quế Sơn) district for My Son is at the other side of the mountain which belongs to Duy Xuyen (Duy Xuyên) district. However, visitors nowadays enter this place by the opposite way.

Right at the main entrance is located a board which shows us details of all tower groups. However, only group B, C and D still remain their original features. The others are mainly in My Son style A1. The tower named A1 is one of the tallest and most noticeable towers here.

Going around the site, you can also see the statue of Siva, The God saving all Kings of Cham era. Like other statues, Siva statue has no head. It is explained that they were ruined during the Vietnam war. However, some believes that when this place was occupied by Dai Viet (Đại Việt) people (old Viet people), they broke the statues' head for religious disagreement.

One of the most interesting points of Cham towers is the pictures or figures on the walls and the bricks. Cham people used a light and thin material to link the bricks together and sculpted on them as well.

Tower B5 and the base of tower B1 have great significance for the whole vestige site. Tower B5 has its roof in the shape of a very charming saddle and walls with many clever sculptures. Tower B1 is the last one built in My Son when kings of Champa moved to the South. This is also the only tower in Cham architecture which has the stone base. Inside the tower, you can see Linga-Yoni symbols representing for the yinyang religious belief which originally came from India and used to be honored in Cham culture.

If you go to My Son in moon seasons, you may find yourself mingled with the fantastic beauty of My Son as well as have a full and profound felling about this place. Besides, you can also find yourself peaceful and totally open-minded in the extremely quiet and calm mountainous atmosphere.
