The remote and
undiscovered Central Highlands contain some of Vietnamese best-kept
secrets where visitors willing to get off-the-beaten track will discover
pristine lakes, clear rivers, vast swathes of old-growth jungle and
isolated ethnic minority villages. Volcanic red earth, dramatic
green forests and glittering crystal lakes make this one of Vietnams
most beautiful and mysterious regions. Along with wild elephants the
area is home to monkeys, tigers and the endangered Javanese Rhinos. The
natives of Ban Don village, 55km north-west of Buon Ma Thuot, are famous
for their elephant-hunting skills and still trap and train the animals
for agricultural work, transport and for festivals and races.
