Hanoi / mai chau / son la / dien bien phu / phong tho / sapa

Day 1: HANOI / HOA BINH / MAICHAU   (L/D)

Pick up at your hotel and drive to the Thai minority village of Mai Chau via Hoa Binh in the heart of Tonkin. En route stop at local market where you might meet some minority people then visit Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant. Lunch in Mai Chau on arrival.

In the afternoon, visit of the Ban Lac minority villages then enjoy a light trek through the rice field and springs to reach Nhot village. Continue to Na Meo village (Thai minority) located at the foot of the mountain.

Dinner and overnight in a stilt house (community centre).

Dinner and overnight in mai chau at mai chau lodge.

Day 2 : MAI CHAU / SON LA   (B/L)

After breakfast drive to Son La (200 km), home to Hmong, Black Thai and White Thai. Lunch en route and on arrival, visit the Old French Prison and its museum and the Lookout Tower. Later, stroll through villages in the south of the town.

Overnight in Son La.

Day 3: SON LA / DIEN BIEN PHU   (B/L)

After breakfast, depart at 7h00 and drive to Dien Bien Phu (170 km, about 6 hours) through the Pha Din Pass with its beautiful scenery. On the way, stop at Thuan Chau market, 40km from Son La, where you will see Black Thai. On arrival, take lunch at a local restaurant and then visit Dien Bien Phu Museum (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays), A1 Hill, Dien Bien Phu Cemetry, the bunker headquarters of the French Commander Colonel Christian de Castries and the Memorial dedicated to French soldiers.

Overnight in Dien Bien Phu.

Day 4: DIEN BIEN PHU / PHONG THO   (B/L)

After breakfast, drive to Phong Tho (190 Km) along the Nam Na Valley. On the way, 22 km from Dien Bien Phu, stop in Hoi Chan and then in Muong May and Lai Chau. Along the way, visit the hamlets of Red H’mong.

Lunch en route.

Overnight in Phong Tho.

Day 5: PHONG THO / SAPA  (B)

After breakfast, visit the local market and then drive to the former mountains retreat of Sapa (80 km). On the way, stop at Tam Duong and the market and then enjoy a walk through the tea plantations. Visit Binh Lu market (on Thursdays) or Paso market (on Mondays). Discover Thac Bac Waterfall before reaching Sapa and checking into the hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure to explore Sapa town and its local market.

Overnight in Sapa.

Day 6: SAPA   (B)

Breakfast at the hotel. Full day discovery of minority villages located in Sapa Valley. drive to Lao Chai and then trek (2 km) through rice fields to a traditional Black H'mong house and then continue the trek to Ta Van village (2 km) to visit a Giay minority village. Then walk through a bamboo forest until you reach Giangtachai, a Red Dzao village. This part of the trip is fascinating with beautiful scenery and colourful ethnic minorities such as the Red Dao with their unique customs and traditions. Your driver will be waiting for you at Giangtachai to bring you back to the hotel. Local lunch in Sapa.

Overnight in Sapa.

Day 7: SAPA / HANOI   (B/L)

After breakfast, return to Hanoi via Lao Cai and Yen Bai (400 km, a 12-hour drive with stops at Flower H’Mong, Nung and Dao villages along the way).

Lunch en route. Arrive in Hanoi late in the evening and transfer to your hotel.

Note: On Sundays there is a chance to drive to Bac Ha or Muong Khuong markets,  to see Flower H’mong, Fula, Tay, Nung and other ethnic minorities.
