Mai Chau - Pu Luong
Located only four hours drive from Hanoi, Mai Chau and Pu Luong Nature Reserve are excellent destinations for the family. Mai Chau is located in a lush valley surrounded by stunning Karst limestone outcrops. Cycle through the verdant valleys, hopping between minority Thai villages and local paddy fields. If you are new to Vietnam this is a great place to get to know the friendly people and experience the breathtaking countryside.
Enter Pu Luong Nature reserve, newly formed in 2003 to help protect the Delacours langur, preserve the unique flora and fauna of the area and to add an alternative source of income to the local Thai communities. Some of the biking will be on an old unsurfaced road built by the French during their 100 year occupation of Vietnam. At other times you’ll be tackling amazing single track (non technical). Overnight in basic but comfortable ecotourism homestay set up by Flora and Fauna International.
End the Adventure at Cuc Phuong National Park, where a visit to the endangered primate rescue centre is a must. Learn about the way of life of the Delacour’s Langur and Cat Ba Langur.
This cycling adventure is supported with experienced biking guides and back up team following where possible by jeep or motorbike. Some riding can be challenging depending on weather conditions. Family Fitness and cycling experience is a must! Recommended for families with children ages 10 and up. Please note contact us if you would like to modify this to suit younger children.
Biking
Day 1 Depart Hanoi. Check into the 3 star Mai Chau Lodge. Afternoon cycle on small paths through minority Thai villages. Visit Mo Luong Cave, once an ammunitions supply cache during the Vietnam War.
Day 2 Drive to Pu Luong Nature reserve and cycle to Kho Muong Village. Picnic lunch enroute. Overnight in Thai village in a house on stilts.
Day 3 Morning cycle mainly downhill on local village footpaths. This ride is the highlight of the trip! After early lunch, transfer out of the reserve and on to Hanoi, visiting the primate rescue centre at Cuc Phuong National Park en route.
