Northern excursion to honour King Hung
There is a popular saying that no matter where you go, remember the 10th of the third month in the lunar calendar, when people commemorate the anniversary of the death of King Hung, or Gio to Hung Vuong in Vietnamese.
Every year, thousands of people from around the country travel to the King Hung temple in the northern province of Phu Tho to participate in the celebrations.
This year, the festival falls on April 15, and even though it is still three weeks away some tour operators are already gearing up to offer tours to the northern region for the festival. Among them, Fiditour is rolling up its sleeves to put together a tour catering specifically to the pilgrims who will travel to Phu Tho to worship their ancestors.
The six days-five nights tour departs from HCMC on April 15 via airline and from Noi Bai Airport will continue on to Phu Tho Province for the festival at King Hung Temple, where the pilgrims can not only join in the festive mood of the crowd but also visit the King Hung Museum and a cluster of temples scattered nearby.
After returning to Hanoi in time for dinner, the tour group will take a train to Lao Cai Province and the well-known tourist attraction of Sapa. During their time in the cool mountainous region, the travelers can visit the Silver Waterfall or stroll round the quaint town where there are numerous old French-style villas, and many ethnic people still wear their national dress.
There is an optional visit to a place called Cong Troi or Heaven's Gate and San May or playground of clouds, where travelers can walk in the clouds and take picturesque photos of Sapa town buried in layers of clouds.
The tour heads back to Hanoi for a day to visit renowned destinations such as Hoan Kiem (sword return) Lake, Van Mieu Quoc Tu Giam or Temple of Literature, which is the first university of Vietnam, and then gets back on the road for the world natural heritage of Halong Bay, which is recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and which is on the current list of contenders as one of the natural, wonders in the world.
The week long trip concludes with visits to Yen Tu Mountain, Tuan Chau Tourist Park and One Column Pagoda, among others.
