Van Don District Island - before and now
Van Don Island District
belongs to Bai Tu Long Bay, more to the northeastern Vietnam than Ha
Long Bay (Quang Ninh Province). It comprises 600 islands with an area
of 584 square kilometers and with Van Don Trading Port and Cai Rong
Town at it core.
Van Don is the largest and most
populated and developed island in the archipelago of Bai Tu Long Bay.
At present, the district island is home to 400,000 people from eight
ethnic groups such as Kinh, San Diu, Dao, Tay, Hoa, Cao Lan, Muong,
Nung.
Van Don is traditionally famous for Van Don Trading Port,. Nature
created an island chain crossing about 35 kilometers coastal line.
In recent years, Van Don has seen changes. Van Don is now seen in a
live portrait. There is bustling Cai Rong Town in the opening period,
groups of foreigners eagerly taking photos, and restaurants crowded
with visitors. A pretty urban scene features spacious houses, long
asphalted roads extending across the island, and ships and boats in
close proximity to each other besides stocky mountain ranges.
Cai Rong is the main town on the island, which is about 30 kilometers
in length and 15 kilometers across at its widest point. Bai Dai (Long
Beach) runs along much of the southern side of the island and has
hard-packed sand with some mangroves. Just offshore, almost touching
distance away, there are stunning rock formations similar to those in
Ha Long Bay.
Particularly, Van Don is one four tourist centers of Quang Ninh
Province and its infrastructure is gradually completed. In early 2004,
the operation of Van Don Bridge made transportation between district
islands and Cam Pha Town more favorable and bustling.
Van Don Island District in the north-eastern province of Quang Ninh is one step closer to becoming an economic zone.
Recently, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung agreed to the construction of
the Van Don economic zone. Accordingly, the Van Don EZ, together with a
deep water port and Hon Mieu industrial zone in the neighbouring Hai Ha
district and the Mong Cai border gate city, is part of a plan to
develop Quang Ninh province’s northeastern region. The EZ will be
developed into a marine ecotourism site with an international airport
as well as a service and trade centre.
And with this decision, Van Don’s economy is expected to develop more strongly.
