This is a community of many beautiful landscapes and relics in the west of Ha Noi. Cổ Ngư Road whose name today is Thanh Niên Road can be compared with a bridge that creates two lakes: one is West Lake and the other side is Trúc Bạch Lake. This double stretch of road is 992 metres long, with a line of trees acting as a separating range. Two sides of the road are rows of flamboyant, willow and Queens flowers.

West Lake is considered as a reflecting mirror of Ha Noi and is the lung of the capital that has the total area of 500 hectares and the history of thousands years. The surrounding path is up to 17 kilometres long. The branch of geography and history has proved that this lake was a part of the former Red River left after the river changed its stream flows. Perhaps because of the change of the river, there have been a number of different common names for this lake in the public like: Fox's Cadaver Lake or Golden Buffalo Lake.

West Lake

According to the old bibliography, this lake went into the history pages with the name of Dam Đam (foggy pond/swamp). Until the 15th century, it was called West Lake. This lake has another name as Lang Bac which is also the name of the place in Tien Son area, Bac Ninh Province where the fierce combats between Two Mrs. Trung's troops and Han (ancient Chinese) troops happened.

For a long time, West Lake has been a beauty spot. In Ly - Tran Dynasties, the kings established many palaces around the lake as sites for resting and entertaining. They are Thuy Hoa Palace in Ly Dynasty, Ham Nguyen Palace under Tran Dynasty (today is Tran Quoc Pagoda), Tu Hoa Palace under Ly Dynasty (Kim Lien Pagoda now), and Thuy Chuong Palace in Le Dynasty which has become Chu Van An School area

During beautiful days at which the wave is peaceful and the wind is calm, boating on West Lake is a swell pleasure. Gliding on the waves have inspired many poets such as Nguyen Du, Nguyen Cong Tru, Nguyen Khuyen, etc.

If you take a promenade around the lake, you can visit a lot of vestiges and beauty spots. For example, you may come to Nghi Tam Village, the hometown of the poetess Ba Huyen Thanh Quan where people can find Kim Lien Pagoda with special architecture. Besides, Nhat Tan Village where peach blossom flourishes during the spring season has a legend that Lac Thi (Lạc Thị) in Hong Bang time has born a bundle of eggs opening out seven dragons there. There are also Xuan Tao Village with Soc Temple worshipping Thanh Giong; Trich Sai Village having Millennium Pagoda worshipping the mother of weaving profession; Ke Buoi Village where traditional paper-making career and Common Advocate Temple at which the mandarins swear together in Ly Dynasty exist; and Thuy Khe Village together with famous Ba Đanh Pagoda. And the most special one is Quan Thanh Temple. Nowadays, more construction projects newly built have contributed to the diversity of the lake's landscape.
