Information Dam O Loan

O Loan (Ôloan), a brackish water lagoon which is right at the end of Quan Cau (Quán Cau) pass, is very near the national highway 1A. It is 22-km away from Tuy Hoa (Tuy Hòa) city. This is the famous place for its historical movement named Can Vuong (Cần Vương) in Phu Yen (Phú Yên) province.

O Loan lagoon's area is about 1, 200 ha. It shares its borders with many communes of Tuy An district such as An Cu (An Cư), An Thanh (An Thạnh), An Hai (An Hải), etc. having a view from Quan Cau pass, O Loan looks like a phoenix on its wings. Meanwhile, it on map seems like a swan opening its wings.


The western lagoon is the area of small hills which are very close together. And its east is the tomb of Cao Bien (Cao Biền), a historical character. It is a legendary story that Cao Bien was buried here by God on the way to harm talents of the country. Actually, it is not a tomb, but a sand dune. Although the dune is near sea, it cannot be destroyed by sea wind because of a cyclone which regularly brings the sand to it.


O Loan is the brackish water lagoon where is also famous for its cockle dishes. It is said that many feudal mandarins often came to this lagoon to enjoy its scenery and cockle dishes whenever they arrived in Phu Yen province.

Another specialty of this place is oyster. Tan Da (Tản Đà), a famous Vietnamese poem who was known as a gourmet also praised this place via his saying "Phú Câu cước cá, Ô Loan miếng hàu" (Phu Cau is famous for fish; O Loan is famous for oyster).


Oysters often live near stone range under the water. Oyster is used for making some very good food like soup, or fried dishes. However, it is most delicious in its underdone condition or in a mix with peanut and tomato.


In addition, O Loan also has a special kind of crab. This crab has red or yellow shell and some yellow short hair at its behind. This so -called special crab does not move sideward, but towards because its pincers and legs are on its front. Besides, this place also has some other food such as shrimp, squid, jelly-fish, and edible seaweed.

At the center of the lagoon, there are two big stones piling each other. O Loan scenery is always an aspiration for many poets. Annually, fishermen here also celebrate a ceremony which attracts thousands of visitors with hope for a successful year. This is one of the special traditional cultural features of Phu Yen province.


O Loan has been recognized as national tourist vestige site.
