One of the must see sites in Hue is Dong Ba Market. Roaming
around this food market would add new color to your visit to this
Vietnamese city. Dong Ba Market in Old Hue is near the position where
the Dong Ba Canal merges with the Perfume River. If you want to know
certain things regarding Vietnamese food or culture, you must come to
this place. What consists in the attraction towards this market is the
preservation of ancient distinctiveness. Dong Ba Market is near the
eastern corner of the Citadel.
Tourists make visit to Dong Ba
Market not only because they can buy many goods and local specialties,
but because in their hearts it is a symbol of Hue's civilization.
Along
with the name of Hue's largest market and the first steel bridge across
the Dong Ba River and Dong Ba Street, Dong Ba also marks a small canal
linking the bazaar with the busy river port of Bao Vinh, Lo Street and
Thanh Ha.
The marketplace was formerly positioned outside the
citadel's Chanh Dong Gate (also commonly called Dong Ba), where today
you will find a park at the end of Phan Dang Luu Street.
Delving into the history of this place, you will find that the bazaar was burnt down in the summer of 1885. In 1887, King Dong Khanh had it reconstructed and named it Dong Ba. However, in the year 1889, King Thanh Thai had it shifted to the present site at the crossroads of the Huong River and the west bank of the Dong Ba Canal. Regarding the causes behind the markets popularity, it's convenient location has to be taken into account.
