The royal tomb and the temple of Mr. Nguyen Đinh Chieu (Nguyễn Đình Chiểu) belongs to An Duc (An Đức) commune, which over 1km far from Ba Tri town, Ben Tre (Bến Tre) province. This royal tomb was built in 1972, after that the local government built a temple and a showroom.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Chieu, alias Manh Trach (Mạnh Trạch), pen-name was Trong Phu (Trọng Phủ), Hoi Trai (Hối Trai), was born on July 1st 1822 in Gia Dinh (Gia Định), Sai Gon (Sài Gòn). The father of teacher Chieu (Chiểu) was Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huy (Nguyễn Đình Huy), who lived at Bo Dien (Bồ Điền) commune, Phong Dien (Phong Điền) suburban, Thua Thien (Thừa Thiên) province and worked as a secretary for the office of Military governor Le Van Duyet (Lê Văn Duyệt). His mother was Mrs. Truong Thi Thiet (Trương Thị Thiệt) living in Gia Đinh. He was a famous patriotic poet in the South of Vietnam and whole of Vietnam. He was the last heir of Han Nom (Hán Nôm) literature with well-known work handed down until now that is "Luc Van Tien" ("Lục Vân Tiên").

In 1843, he got high-school diploma at Gia Định examination compound. When he was 25 years old, he went to Hue (Huế) for studying and waiting for Ky Dau (Kỷ Dậu) examination (in 1849), but he could not take the examination because he heard that his mother passed away. On the way to his motherland for observing the interval of mourning, he felt so sorrowful and he grieved for his mother so much that he fall ill and become blind with both his eyes. During 40 years afterwards, he spent the life of a blind. After that, his fiancée broke her promise. Overcoming difficulties, he opened a school, compounded medicine, and created literature work.

In 1854, he got married with Ms. Le Thi Dien (Lê Thị Điền). In 1861, he returned Ba Tri - Ben Tre to live like a hermit and passed away there.


Every year, Ben Tre people get his birthday (July 1st) to hold formal commemorating ceremony for him.
