From downtown HCMC, drive to Thu Duc Intersection in Thu Duc District, turn right on Nguyen Van Tang Street and go straight to the Go Cong Intersection, then turn right and go for about one more kilometer to reach Thu Duc Stork Garden in Go Cong Hamlet in Long Thanh My Ward.
Previously, this region belonged to Thu Duc District, but despite District 9 swallowing up the area the stork garden retained its old name.
Bordered by rows of coconut trees next to the river, the shady garden is an ideal place for camping.
Students regularly visit it to play games and go
fishing during the day. In the afternoon they take boats to go on the
river and view the storks return to their nests. And when the night
falls, they light campfires and sing together around the fire.
Reaching
the garden in the morning, you will find that no storks are sitting on
the trees because they all fly away in the early morning hours to find
food. They usually only come back to their nest at 4 p.m. or later. The
garden’s employees say the storks gather in the park between September
and April.
But timing it right is worth it. Rowing out into the river and seeing the many white storks flying to the garden is an unforgettable moment for many visitors, especially those who come from the city and so have had very few chances to discover the life in rural areas.
If you get hungry from bird watching, the garden’s employees serve food and beverages. You can also rest on hammocks and in thatched huts in the garden.
Groups who want to visit Thu Duc Stork Garden, but do not like to plan the trip by themselves can book Thu Duc Tourist Service Co.’s weekend tours.
The half-day excursion starts at 1:30 p.m. with a visit to Hoa Ca Crocodile Farm. There visitors can learn how to raise crocodiles and tan the crocodile skins. They can also buy products made from crocodile skins and dishes prepared with crocodile meat.
The tour’s next stop is a company in Thu Duc District that specializes in making nem (fermented pork roll wrapped in banana leaves), considered as one of the region’s specialties.
A visit to the 200-year-old Hoi Son Pagoda is next on the agenda, before taking a boat on the Dong Nai and Tac rivers to islets and rafts that raise fish.
At 5 p.m. visitors will stop at Thu Duc Stork Garden to observe the white storks returning to their nests.
The tour costs VND137,000 for 15 to 24 people and VND152,000 for eight to 14 people.
