Information Truc Bach Lake

Truc Bach Lake was formed in the 17th century when the inhabitants of two villages Yen Hoa (Yen Phụ now) and Yen Quang (Quan Thanh streets today) dammed up a dike to prevent water from the southern-east corner of West Lake in order to raise and catch fish. Along the banks of Truc Bach Lake are a number of historical relics and special architectures such as Quan Thanh Temple at the southern-west of the lake. To the east, there is Châu Long Pagoda (in Châu Long street). The history has it that this pagoda was built from Tran Dynasty and was the meditating place of the Princess, King Tran Nhan Tong's daughter. Besides, there is also another temple called An Tri where Uy Do, a hero in fighting Nguyen troops in the past, is worshipped.

Three sides surrounding the lake are concealed with streets and houses; only the west side bordered with Youth Street can reveal the tranquil and peaceful beauty of the lake's surface. To the north is a small mound where Puppy Temple, which attaches to the story of King Ly Cong Uan's moving imperial capital, is placed.

King Ly Cong Uan was born in 974 and decided to move the imperial capital in 1010, "Canh Tuất" year (as lunar calendar). "Tuất" means dog - one of the twelve animals used in lunar calendar. As the old belief, dog is an animal having ability to expel evil spirits and preserve the land. The legend had it that before the day Ly Cong Uan migrating, a dog came and made its nest to bear a puppy on the peak of Mount Nung. Then at this place they built "Main palace estrade" and founded a temple to offer sacrifices to the dog and its child. Until the next reign, Puppy Temple was removed to outside the royal citadel, on the mound at Truc Bach Lake.

Nowadays, the beauty spot Truc Bach Lake along with Ly Tu Trong Park and West Lake has created an overall view of harmonious nature, making up a beautiful landscape of the capital Ha Noi.
