The year 1890 marked the institution of
medicinal herb shop called Nam Nha Duong in Binh Thuy market from Binh
Nhut hamlet held by Nguyen Giac Nguyen for keeping liaison and
gathering patriots against the French colonialists. By 1895, the coming
back of Nguyen Giac Nguyen to Binh Nhut hamlet (at the end of Binh Thuy
bridge) formed up the establishment of a pagoda named "Nam Nha Duong".
In
first days, the pagoda housed just three simple apartments made from
trees and tiles. The entity comprised sanctum, the eastern and western
houses. The pagoda was rebuilt with five apartments and two lean-tos in
1905. Its central chamber experienced third reconstruction in 1917.
When the high-ranking bonze Nguyen Giac Nguyen passed away on December
22nd 1917, the half-done work had been undertaken by Mr. Tran Van
Nhieu, Mrs. Thai Tu and Thai Nam.
The pagoda Nam Nha became historical - cultural relic on January 25th 1991 with the approval of MOCI.
The 100-odd year pagoda is distinguished by its both ancient beauty and contributions to the revolutionary movements for the national liberation.
- In February 1913, in the trip back
to the South in aspiration of mobilising the patriotic movements, Cuong
De secretly stayed in Nam Nha Duong for deliberating national affairs
with Nguyen Giac Nguyen. This event involved clandestine watching by
enemy spy.
- On September 7th 1926, the Nam Nha Duong pagoda granted foundation of "Viet Nam quang phuc hoi" then renamed "Viet Nam phuc quoc hoi".
- In September 1929, after Special
Commissioner of An Nam Communist Party - Hau Giang Branch activated in
Binh Thuy (Can Tho), Nam Nha Duong turned out to be the address which
the Special Commissioner of the southern regional party committee
assuming touch with other units
