Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Museum (Tim Doling)

This provincial museum commemorates the important Nghệ Tĩnh uprising against French rule, which took place under the leadership of the Communist Party in 1930-1931. Established on 15 January 1960, the Xô Viết Nghệ Tĩnh Museum is located inside the old citadel on the site of the former Vinh Prison where, from 1929 to 1937, thousands of revolutionary soldiers involved in the struggle against French rule were imprisoned. The monument in front of the Museum commemorates the address made by Uncle Hồ to the people of Nghệ An during his first return visit to the province of his birth in 1957. Artefacts on view here include photographs and documents relating to the Nghệ Tĩnh uprising, plus weapons and other equipment used in the uprising and the personal possessions of leading revolutionaries such as Nguyển Phong Sắc, Nguyễn Tiềm and Nguyễn Châu. Next door to the museum is the newly-constructed Nghệ An Provincial Museum.
