History of discovering the grotto Phong Nha

Photo of Entry: History of discovering the grotto Phong Nha

Phong Nha - Ke Bang has a system of 300 small and huge grottos around. The caves here have the total length of more than 80 km but have only been discovered 20 kilometres, consisting of 17 km in Phong Nha area and 3 kilometres in Ke Bang area.

About the history of discovering the grottos, the script sculptured on the cliff by ancient Cham Pa language showed that Phong Nha grotto had been discovered by Cham people since the old days when this land had belonged to the Kingdom of Cham Pa. Until the end of 19th century, Lépold Michel Cadière, a French Catholic priest, found out the writing of Cham people and honoured Phong Nha as "The first Indochinese grotto".

In 1935, one local man accidentally discovered a dried cave whose entrance was 1000 metres to Phong Nha cave's entrance and was of the height of 200 metres. That cave was called Fairy Grotto. It was located in the limestone mountainous block Kẻ Bàng, belonging to Sơn Trạch Commune, Bo Trach District. Its landscape is not less grandiose than Phong Nha Grotto but there are not any underground rivers there.

In 1990, General University of Ha Noi together with English Grottos Discovery Association carried out the first discovery commanded by Howard Limbert. This group finished discovering Arch Grotto then.

Until the third adventure in 1994, people discovered and investigated 20 caves with 70 kilometres totally, including 17 caves in Phong Nha area and 3 caves in Ke Bang area.

In 2005, English Grottos Discovery Association uncovered one dried grotto and named it Paradise Grotto and this has been the most enormous and beautiful grotto in Phong Nha-Ke Bang. Up to now, the scientists have been studying 44.5 kilometres of the grottos but the travellers can only go as far as 1.500 metres.

It can be said that the results from exploring and doing research have brought a comprehensive understanding about the grotto system in Phong Nha-Ke Bang and they are the foundation for preservation, scheme and developing tourism here.
