Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park was granted world natural heritage status by UNESCO on July 3, 2003. The reasons for its renown are obvious to those who go exploring.

Since gaining UNESCO recognition as a place of world importance in 2003, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has attracted a great number of tourists, international and local, who want to explore it, even briefly. Its natural landscapes, displays of culture and history fittingly join the ranks of three other world heritage sites that are nearby. These other three are the ancient town of Hoi An, the ancient capital of Hue and My Son Sanctuary.

So, Quang Binh Province hopes the national park will follow the lead of the other heritage sites and give a big push to its tourism industry. Besides, when the transport between Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Ho Chi Minh’s hometown Nghe An, and Laos and Thailand, becomes more convenient, more and more tourists will be attracted, especially through the East-West Corridor.

The national park has caverns, mountains and forests that have existed for over 400 million years, so tourists are attracted to its wild beauty and hidden spirit as well as the quietness of the environment.

The best time of the day to enjoy the beauty of the national park is early afternoon. Therefore, tours depart from Dong Hoi Town at that time. Along the 40-km Ho Chi Minh Road a stop is made by the Son River so that tourists can take a boat and enjoy part of the natural park. The beauty of the river is astounding, with its clear blue water, green and brown moss, and the rocks and tree canopies along the river’s banks. All together the scene is a fanciful natural picture on a par with the scenery of Halong Bay. With peaceful air of the countryside, the beautiful scenery of the park makes tourists feel at ease, especially if it is their first time to the park.

After about 30 minutes of relaxation on the river, tourists begin the trip into the Phong Nha caverns. The first is Bi Ky Cavern, which is magnificent because of its stalactites in shapes of a lion, Bodhisattva and angels. Tourists can also stop at a sand bank and view words the Cham people carved in ancient times. In the 19th century, a French explorer discovered the place and appraised Phong Nha as the best cave system in Indochina.

The attraction of the cave is also the existence of hundreds or thousands of other caves, including Fairy and Palace caves inside Bi Ky Cavern. The cave is called Fairy Cave since it has many stalactites in the shape of a fairy lying down, or architectures like a paradise where beautiful fairies gather. At Palace Cave, tourists can feel the solemn and glory atmosphere of a real palace. The unique feature at Palace Cave is that when knocking on the stalactites, they will produce sounds like those of a lithophone.

Though not as beautiful as the wet cavern, the dry cavern is also an attraction to tourists. The dry cavern has many unique, multiple-shaped stalactites. Since opening to tourism, the cavern has been one of the top choices of tourists visiting Phong Nha-Ke Bang.
